| E. B. WAKEFIELD NOT PRESENT AT 65TH REUNION 15th Mass. Regiment Holds Reunion at Worcester Illness of Elias B. Wakefield, sole survivor of the Slater Guards, prevented his attendance yesterday,(at) the 65th annual reunion of the 15th Massachusetts Civil War regiment, in observance of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Ball’s Bluff. It was held in G. A. R. hall in Worcester and only two surviving members were present. These were vice president Leonard E. Thayer of Oxford, who presided in the absence of President Wakefield and George W. Ward of Worcester, who was toastmaster at the exercise following the dinner. The absence of Mr.Wakefield was one of the very few occasions during the 65 years that he has not been present at the reunion. Officers elected for the year were , President, Elias B. Wakefield; Vice President, Leonard E. Thayer; Secretary and Treasurer, George W. Ward, and Chaplain, Samuel E. Simmons of Roslindale. It was voted to omit the election of a board of directors owing to the small membership and the president, vice president and secretary were constituted a board of governors. After the meeting the Women’s Relief Corps served dinner. Grace was asked by Dr. William S. Mitchel, pastor of Wesley M. E. church. Remarks were made by Dr. Mitchel, by Edwin J. Foster, past Grand Commander of the G. A. R., Asa Bartlett of Webster, Mr. Thayer and Albert Everett of Co. H., Howell, N. Y. Mr. Everett, who is 92, was accompanied by his neice, Miss. Prior who also spoke, as did Spaulding Bartlett, son of the late Amos Bartlett, who was commander of Co. I. of the 15th Regiment. Letters of regret at their inability to attend were received from Capt. Samuel J. Simmons of Roslindale, President Wakefield, Miss Janet L. Carpenter of Hastings Neb., for her father , the last survivor of of Co. B., Mrs. Lia Gale of Hollywood, California, the widow of the late Maj. Walter C. Gale of the 15th, and Mrs. Lucy F. Stockwell of North Grafton, daughter of Francis Huckins of Co. G. There were two deaths during the year, those of John Legassey of Co. G. and James Cifford (Clifford) of Co. E., Clinton Mass.´ The veterans rose in respect to the memory of Thomas A. Edison at 3:30 p. m. |
