  • Albert wrote a letter on 16 May 1863 as follows: describing in detail the occupation of Fredricksburg by Gen. Gibbon's division of the 2d Corps on May 3rd and 4th 1863, and the extreme danger of the two companies, including Co. H, of the 15th Massachussetts of being left behind during the retreat on May 5th.
    Everett distrusted the Union high command, and said if the Rebels "had come down [into town] ...the pontoons would have been swing[ing] round in all probability before all got over." We could then "swim and take our chances, or be prisoners, for the general would not run the risk of having the Rebs get possession of the bridge.... Consequently, we felt no little anxiety... lest the Rebs swoop down upon us, and we get to Richmond a good deal sooner than desirable." Since the fog hid their movements, Everett said their two companies formed a line of battle in the streets, then gradually withdrew until within thirty rods of the river, when they "double quicked it down to the bank."
