Farr, his father, served in the Company D, 51st Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, being discharged on 29 May 1863 at New Berne, NC as fourth Sergeant.
- On 8 Jun 1863 his mother, Louisa M. Wilder, died at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, at age 47.

Brainerd Hall feels that he has accomplished a great thing in securing for the late Comrade George W. Farr's grave a government headstone. - This man is believed to be the son of Francis and Ann Farrell from Ireland, who are found in the 1850 census of Blackstone, Worcester County, Massachusetts. If so he has a brother Michael, b. 1834-1835 in N. Y., and a younger sister, Ann.
Noted: in the 1890 Veterans' Census, Michael Farrell who fought in the 10th Massachusetts was enumerated in Canton, Norfolk, MA, right next to William. Please contact the Webmaster if you have further information. - At the time of his enlistment in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, William gave his occupation as mason.
- William Farrell married Mary Gaffney.
