On 12 Jul 1861 Frank mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Clinton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 27 years, 6 months and 29 days old. - Ford's history places Frank Graichen in Company C of the 15th, but the MASSCW places him in Company H. The 1870 roster seems not to have found him at all, and suggests he was mustered out with those determined to be physically unfit on 6 August 1861. This may have to do with the numerous variations of his name, found as GRACIAN, GRAITCHER, and GRAYHEN, so far.
- On 6 Aug 1861, Franz was not "discharged due to disability", as per the 1870 Adjutant General's roster of Company C. This is an error, possibly due to a change of company.
- On 29 Aug 1861, Karl Friedrich Bernhard Graichen, his brother, was was enlisted in the 20th Massachusetts, and deserted 30 June 1862 at Harrison's Landing.

Smith, Matthew Greelman, Frank Grachein, and Henry Kinney, the first three wounded in the Balls Bluff fight, and the last two sick from the hospital at Poolesville, arrived in Worcester by the express train from New York, Sunday forenoon. They left Poolesville on Friday morning. The men were in charge of Lieut. A. L. Fuller, and were taken to Clinton by private conveyance from this city. Governor Andrew received a dispatch Saturday, from his aide, Col. Henry Lee Jr. at Poolesville, stating that Private Turner of Clinton died of his wounds after the battle. - On 2 May 1862 Franz ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts discharged for wounds, according to the MASSCW.
