On 12 Jul 1861 Frank mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Clinton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. The 1870 roster seems not to have found him at all, and suggests he was mustered out with those determined to be physically unfit on 6 August 1861. This may have to do with the numerous variations of his name, found as GRACIAN, GRAITCHER, and GRAYHEN, so far.
