He was 17 years, 4 months and 25 days old. - On 30 Oct 1861 at "The Worcester Spy", Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, James Hughes was included among "The Killed Wounded and Missing of the Fifteenth Regiment," after Ball's Bluff.

- On 17 Sep 1862 James Hughes was wounded at The Battle of Antietam, Washington County, Maryland, and lost a leg.
- He died on 27 Sep 1862 at Hoffman's Hospital, Smoketown, Washington County, Maryland, unmarried, of wounds received at the Battle of Antietam. He was 18 years, 7 months and 10 days old.
- He was buried in Sep 1862 at St. John's Cemetery, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
- On 28 Oct 1862 Eliza Hughes received a pension to surviving family member based on James's service; his mother, received certificate number 11980.
- On 3 Oct 1864 Michael Hughes , possibly his brother, a laborer from Grafton, enlisted in the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, Company G, and mustered out at Washington DC on 16 August 1865. There is a pension file.
- Eliza, his mother, outlived James and died on 16 Jan 1887 at Ashland, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
- On 17 Sep 1900 James Hughes was included on the Civil War memorial at Antietam Battlefield, Sharpsburg, Maryland, as having died of his wounds received at the battle. (Read several articles from the Fitchburg Sentinel about the planning for the memorial.).

On 12 Jul 1861 John mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of North Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts. - He died in Oct 1862 of disease per MASSCW.
- He died on 16 May 1863 under circumstances not explained in the 1870 roster.
- On 19 Jan 1870 John A. Hughes was included on the Civil War memorial at North Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, . See: An Oration delivered Jan. 19, 1870 by Gen'l Francis A. - On 17 Feb 1862 Andrew ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts as detached to the Western Flotilla.
- On 8 Aug 1862 He was noted as discharged with no reason given in the 1870 roster.
- Starting 1 Oct 1862, Andrew also served in the transferred to the Gunboat services.
- Between 1 Oct 1862 - 8 Aug 1863 Andrew served on U. S. S. Judge Torrence, Mound City, Carondelet, and Clara Dolsen, being discharged with the rank of Seaman.
