- On 22 Jan 1864, Mitchell was reenlisted.
- On 26 Mar 1864 Mitchell ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts deserted (per MASSCW) while on veteran furlough, and dropped from the rolls of the 15th. However, considering the number of rosters where he is supposed to have been, his desertion is unclarified.
- On 27 Jul 1864 Mitchell ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts by administrative transfer to the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, according to the 1870 roster, but no record found there.
- On 12 Jun 1865 Mitchell Butterfield ended his service with the roster of Battery B, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery showing him until this date.
