- Concerning the parentage of Agnes Elizabeth "Maggie" ROLAND -
The original research on the parents of Maggie Roland presented two circumstantial possibilities:
First -- a birth certificate of "female" child of Wm. H. and Mary (Long) ROLAND, born 21 Feb 1884., (No. 35620 at Vital Statistics in Washington DC.), This is the only birth certificate for a female "Roland" born between July 1883 and July 1884 in DC. This theory has been discarded.
Second -- Elizabeth A. (Roland), daughter, W. F., Jan, 1884, 16, single, enumerated in the 1900 census with Geo. T. Roland and his wife Martha.
The Rolands were very flexible in the use of christian names. One finds first and middle name switched at random, and nick names, such as "Maggie" used in official documents.
However, Agnes Elizabeth "Maggie" ROLAND has been attributed to George T. and Marths S. (Thorne) Rolland based on two other family connections in the next generation.
First, Maggie's daughter, Harriet, married George E. Oxford in 1922, and the witness was Gladys (Sellner) Huekels, Maggie's niece, daughter of Maggie's sister, Carrie (Roland) Sellner.
Second, when Maggie's daugher, Harriet could not care for her third child, James Oxford, he was given to Maggie's other sister, Viola (Roland) Baden.
Both Carrie and Viola Roland were the daughters of George T. and Marths S. (Thorne) Roland.
