      In 1869 the Navy had gently shoved the Army off Goat Island and built the Naval Torpedo Station in it's place. The original mission for the Torpedo Station was to serve as the Navy's experimental center for the development of torpedoes and torpedo equipment, explosives, and electrical equipment. The Navy's initial presence in those days consisted of a few wooden buildings and three civilian employees.
      The requirements of the fleet and world events soon dictated that expansion of the Torpedo Station on Goat Island would be necessary, and by 1906 the Navy Torpedo Factory was established, also on Goat Island. This industrial facility became the sole manufacturer of torpedoes for the fleet, and Newport soon found itself to be the Navy's headquarters for torpedo research, development, and overhaul.

This appears to be a five-family appartment building, and James shares one appartment with this John Stone who is called a "Keeper". (The word is not "head" but he is listed first.)
      James was b. in Canada, and immigrated in 1905 (? last two digits are smeared) but he is an "alien" his father was (supposedly) b. in Scotland and his mother in Canada. He is a house painter.
    • The civilian, government employee pension file of George R. Oxford has an endorsement dated 27 Nov 1931 stating that "The second Mr. Oxford was carried as J. Oxford, and was employed as Laborer at $2.00 per day for two periods, from June 3, 1901 to Dec. 14, 1901, and from Mar. 29, 1902 to April 12, 1903."
    • He and Hannah (Annie) Sullivan had no known children.

    • John Oxford was born on 2 Jun 1811 at Miramichi, Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada, son of Mathew Oxford and Mary Sweezey.
    • Mr. W. Hamilton, Miramichi Historian, writes:
      In 1833, John Oxford killed an Indian named Thomas Swason in a fight. John was apprehended and locked up in jail. Outcome unknown. There was an article in the Gleaner (Chatham newspaper) of December 3, 1833. (Newspapers at the Provincial Archives.)

    • John Oxford married Anna [?] at Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada, Maybe. She is said to have been the widow Lewis wiith five children by her 1st husband -- Sophia, Anastasia, Christine, Mary Ann and one boy. There are baptisms for a Sophia and Anastasia by John and "Jesse" Oxford, but they do not appear in later census reports.       John Oxford was killed at Jones's Crossing (near the old site at Oxford Brook) on December 21, 1883, when his horse crossed the tracks in front of a train, with him seated in the sled which the horse was pulling. There was an inquest which was reported upon in detail in the Union Advocate of 2 January 1884.

Uncle John (John M. Oxford) also said that our grandfather, (John. b. 1817) married Anna Lewis (or Mrs. Mary Lewis) or Mrs. LeMire. I have no doubt misunderstood this data."
