When she was about 20 years old, they moved to Uvalde Co., Texas. One and a half years later, she married John Henry Lemons. They lived here and in Edwards Co. about 13 years where they had to be on guard continuously for Indians.
Many nights when the Indians were passing through, they would take their babies and hid out in the tall grass, away from the house for nights at a time. She related many cases where whole families were scalped by the Indians and a small child would be carried off and raised as their own. but if a person was crippled or deformed in any way, the Indians would not harm them.
Leaving here, they moved to Pecos Co., ranching here for about 10 years. Then they moved to Brewster Co. building their home in Marathon Texas, where after losing her husband she reared her entire family of nine children to adult age -- also two grandchildren, J. W. and Maruice Speer. In their earlier married live, they also reared to manhood an orphan boy, Jim Short. Also her double cousin, Austin Allison, made his home with her when he was a young boy."
