    Richard Purchase, a former resident of Flushing, whose butcher store in Mainstreet, near the Fountain was well known to old residents in Flushing, died Saturday morning in St. Mary Immaculate hospital, Jamaica, at the age of 81. For many years he had resided in Jamaica, his home being at 80 Clinton avenue. He had been seriously ill since February 1.


    Mr. Purchase was the son of John Purchase and Susan Cutter of Little Neck. His father conducted a butcher business on Broadway, in which he assisted. Later he opened a store near Broadway in Main street, which was destroyed by fire. In 1880 he went to Jamaica and later opened a stationery and variety store in the old Herriman Building, corner of Jamaica and Herriman avenues. For the past 25 years he had been engaged in the insurance business in which he continued right up to his last illness, being one of the oldest men doing insurance work in Queens borough. Two years ago, his son Clarence Purchase joined him in partnership in this business.
    Mr. Purchase married Caroline Carman daughter of Thomas Carman of Jamaica, who survives him. He built his home on Clinton avenue, Jamaica, 40 years ago.

    He was a member of several organizations including the Jamaica Veterans' Volunteer Firemen's association (Note: I have a photo of him in fireman's uniform), the Jamaica Village society and a life member of the Queens and Nassau Agricultural society.

    Surviving him are his wife, Caroline Carman, a son Clarence, a granddaughter, Florence, daughter of Clarence, both residents of Jamaica; two grandchildren, Mary and Albert Richard of Flushing, children of his son the late Albert B. Purchase; two brothers, William and John Roe, the latter of Chicago; and a sister, Mrs. Francis Moore, of Allentown, Pa.

    Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, February 21, at 2:30 o'clock from Fairchild's Funeral Parlors, 46 164th street, Jamaica. Interment will be in the family plot at Flushing Cemetery.

         Cochran for the past six years has been ranch manager for Tom M. Peters, proprietor of the Baboquivari Ranch, and severed his connection with Mr. Peters about a year ago, when the latter entered a partnership with Clant Onley and purchased a ranch at Clifton. Cochran was a cattle inspector here (Tucson) in 1919 under Ben McKINNEY. (Note: Homer Cochran's mother was a McKinney. Relationship, if any, unknown.)
    Before coming to Arizona from his native Texas several years ago, "Red" was a deputy sheriff in Brewster County, Texas, for six years and a constable in Marathon, Tex.
    Cochran, who presents a picturesque type of Western cowman, was recently thrust into the limelight as the result of shooting a padlock from the gate of the Santa Margarita Ranch. The lock had been placed on the gate of the Ronstadt pasture by order of J. M. Ronstadt, who desired to divert traffic from a public road that had been in use for many years. Cochran, upon finding his way to the upper ranch of Peters, shattered the lock with a 30-30 rifle. He was exhonerated by a jury in justice court.

He was driving to Tucson in a car belonging to Portor Emerson Brown, who was a guest at the ranch.
         According to reports reaching Tucson last night, Cochran was apparently blinded by the sun, the big car skidded on the road and turned over before Cochran could straighten it out.
         The accident was discovered by F. C. Clements of Hollywood who was driving toward Tucson from Benson. He saw the wreck and heard Cochran's shouts for help. Clements hurried to the car and found Cochran pinned under the machine.
         Dr. R. E. Yellot of Benson was notified and hurried to the scene. When the doctor arrived, Cochran had been removed from the wreck and placed in the Clements machine. The physician saw at once that the case was serious and needed hospital attention.
         He administered hasty first aid, giving medicine to help the patient rally from the shock and then Clements started for Tucson. He was met a short distance outside the city by an ambulance from the Reilly Undertaking company and Cochran was transferred.
    Native of Texas:
         The ambulance took the patient to the Thomas-Davis clinic where he was pronounced dead and removed to the Reilly company's rooms. Unofficial reports last night indicated he died of a broken neck.
         Clements brought the personal effects of Brown and the dead man to Tucson where they were placed in charge of the sheriff's office. The sheriff had been notified as soon as the call came to Tucson,m Cochran having asked that he be taken to that office where he is well known.
         Deputy Fred Arnold was sent out to investigate the affair and Deputy Ora Shinn was sent to notify his wife who lives near the Mayse airport south of the city.
         Cochran, who was 46 years of age was a native of Texas. He came to Arizona many years ago however, having been a resident of Tucson and vicinity for approximately 14 years.
         He came to Pima county from Graham county where he had been a ranchman, a profession which he has followed all his life.
    Was Cattle Inspector:
         When he first came to Tucson, he served as cattle inspector in the period when Rye Miles was sheriff. Later he was jailor for a time and still later he was foreman of the ranch belonging to Tom Peters until it was sold.
         After leaving that position Cochran became a candidate for constable in the last general election but lost out in the primaries.
    He leaves a widow and one son, Charles, Jr."

         "Funeral services for Charles Cochran, veteran rancher and formerly a peace officer, who was killed in an automobile accident here Monday night, will be held this afternoon at 5 o'clock with the Rev. Richard S. Beal officiating, it was announced last night.
         The Reilly Undertaking company has the body and the service wilsl be held in the parlors of the mortuary. Mr. Cochran was 46 years old when he was killed. Funeral arrangements had been held up pending the arrival of relatives.
         Mr. Cochran left his widow, Mrs. Laura Cochran; a son, Charles, Jr., and a daughter, Miss Winnibelle, of San Francisco, who is en route to Tucson. He had been a resident of Tucson for 10 years coming here from Graham county. A rancher by profession, he also had been cattle inspector for Pima counta, deputy sheriff, and candidate for constable. He was former manager of the Tom Peters ranch.
         The Woodmen of the World, W. A. Frazier camp No. 111, will have charge of the ritual at the grave."

         "A Keems Canyon woman was fatally injured and two other persons critically hurt in a collision Friday on U. S. 66 about eight miles west of Winslow.
         The highway patrol said Winnie Belle Purchase, 55, died in the Winslow Community Hospital shortly after the crash. Her husband, Albert, 56, the driver, was listed in fair condition.
         The patrol said their car was struck by another which went off the right side of the road twice then veered across the center line and hit the Purchase car.
         The patrol said Robert Corzine, 30, of China Lake, CA, and his wife, Shirley, 29, were listed in critical condition. Their daughter, Christie, 7, was reported in good condition. It was not learned who was driving their car."

         Mrs. Purchase, an alumna of the University of Arizona and a former correspondent for the Arizona Daily Star, was killed in an automobile accident near Winslow Friday.
         A member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Mrs. Purchase was a member of the UA's first women's polo team and also belonged to the Desert Riders.
         She was born June 18, 1910, in Marathon, TX, and came to Tucson at the age of six. Mrs. Purchase had taught school in Tucson, Miami, Albuquerque, N. M., and Montana, and at the time of her death was teaching at Keams Canyon.
         Mrs. Purchase was the author of articles on outdoor life and Indian lore published in the Arizona Daily Star, the Arizona Republic and the Globe Record.
         She belonged to the Delta Kappa Gamma, the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Association of University Women.
         Her survivors include her husband, Albert, a member of the Indian Service, stationed at Keams Canyon; her mother, Mrs. Laura L. Chochran, of Tucson; a brother, Charles M. Cochran, of Phoenix, and two sons; Richard, of San Diego, CA, and Charles, of Keesler AFB, Miss.
         Mrs. Purchase will be buried in private ceremonies at the Gila County Memorial Gardens, Miami. The date has not been announced.
         The family suggests remembrances in the form of contributions to the UA Scholarship Loan Fund."
