"I have been requested to give a brief sketch of my life, to the friends who may read these pages. I was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. My father's name was George P. Watts, of Sandwich, England. My mother's name before marriage was Margaretta Hills, of Ramsgate, England.
I have heard my father say he was a descendant of Isaac Watts, the hymn writer . My aunt, my father, and sister all composed poetry. I can remember from the early age of two years, and many of the poems concerning the little girl are memories of my life, commencing when two years old with the one called "Infant Memories".
My mother died at Paterson (NJ) and my father married again. When nine years old we moved to Washington, Warren county, N.J. and I united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of that place and now I find myself alone in the world, dependent on the labor of my hands for subsistence.....etc."
