He is a tailor. Apparantly, Ann did not officially practice the trade of dressmaker that she learned in England. There is no indication of property in this census. (Note: Since they owned their own home 10 years later, it does not seem likely that they arrived in America impoverished.).

(Note: Civil War period: The Sesquicentennial history of Sennett, under Civil War Veterans, states, "Thomas Relph drafted, went to Elmira, was classed." It is also noted that the first Civil War draft was 1863. In Thomas' case, he was already 39 and probably classified as too old. The NY State Bureau of War Records has no information on him. But the National Archives says he was "classed" in the 93rd NY." 93rd New York, aka "the Morgan Rifles" is included as one of William F. Fox's top 300 Union Fighting Regiments.).

RELPH -- Thomas Relph was born Jan. 13, 1824 at Wigton, Cumberland county, England, and died Jan. 6, 1891, at Sennett, Cayuga county, N.Y. He passed in a moment of time from apparently perfect health into death by heart disease. He was converted at the age of 22 years and united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church. He was married in 1847. His wife who survives him, joined the Wesleyan Methodists by letter at that time.

He came to this country with his family in 1850 and settled in Sennett, N.Y. He at once united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and he continued in it until his death. About 1870, Brother and Sister Relph removed their membership to Weedsport, on account of the discontinuance of Methodist preaching at Sennett.

Brother Relph was a good man. Quiet, unostentatious, faithful, devout, kindly in spirit, he was highly esteemed by the church and the community where he lived. Living four miles from Weedsport, and often under the necessity of walking, yet he rarely failed to be in his pew on the Sabbath. Sister Relph and the children attended the Presbyterian church at Sennett, it being impossible for them to be regularly at Weedsport. They will keenly miss a faithful husband and father. Of the six children, five are members of the Church. Brother Relph was true to his trust and ready for Heaven when so suddenly called.
  • Anne Reay, his wife, outlived Thomas Relph and died at age 88 on 13 May 1913 at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, USA.

Thomas Henry Relph

M, b. circa 1856, d. 9 March 1864, File ID#25
  • Thomas Henry Relph was born circa 1856 at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, son of Thomas Relph Emigrant to America 1849 and Anne Reay.
  • On 19 June 1860 he was enumerated in the household of Thomas Relph and Anne Reay, his parents , in the 1860 US census at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York.
  • Thomas Henry Relph died on 9 March 1864 at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, from the bite of a rabid dog.
  • (The following newspaper article, published 10 March 1864, from an unidentified newspaper was in the possession of Paulina Dennis in 1979.)
Thomas Henry Relph, son of Thomas Relph, of Sennett, Cayuga Co., N:Y:, was bitten by a mad dog on the 13th of November, 1863, aged 7 years.
He, with several other boys, were playing hide and seek. He darted under the store steps to hide. The dog met him there, setting his cruel teeth through his tender hand. Fears were entertained immediately that the dog was mad, for it went forth on its mission of death, snapping at everything that appeared along his path, horses, cows, hogs, sheep and dogs, until overtaken and shot by Mr. George Crossman. Henry was taken soon to Syracuse, to the most skilful hydrophobist physician, who thought that he might treat him so as to prevent hydrophobia; and vainly all had hoped that this would prove to be so, until Feb. 29, when, attempting to open a door with an iron handle, he exclaimed, "Oh! that hurt my hand and arm." Thursday, he was rather restless, and asked for a drink of water. When offered to him the sight of it threw him into spasms.
From that time until he died Saturday morning, 8 o'clock, his sufferings were intense. Part of the time during his spasms it was necessary to tie him to prevent him injuring others. He would try to bite and scratch every one who came near him. The froth poured out of his mouth continually. The sight to parents and neighbors was most terrible indeed, and none could look upon the sufferer without weeping. An hour before he died he said, "It's growing dark; I cannot play any longer," supposing that he had been playing marbles with the boys. In many respects he was a superior child; his fidelity to his parents was great. He loved the Sabbath School and was always present there.
It seems that such circumstances as these should lead those who keep dogs to watch them very closely, and if they appear strange or singular at any time at once put them out of the way. Better that a thousand dogs should be killed than that one person should be bitten and cause parents and friends to suffer as they have in this cause. E. P. Eldredge. Elbridge, March 9, 1864.
