    Mr. Walter E. Stickley
    Strasburg, Virginia
    My dear sir:
As Private Harold Ralph's immediate commanding officer I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to you. Harold had been in my Group since he joined this orgnization and I shall feel his loss greatly. He died, a fighting marine, giving his all for the cause which you and I know is right. Why fate chose him is something none of us will ever know. Nevertheless I hope your grief won't be so great that you will overlook the fact that Harold was a real man and that on the occasionof his death he wouldn't have exchanged places with anyone.
Harold Ralph died as a result of a direct bonb hit on his machine gun emplacement. It took place during the hours of darkness when his position was bonbed by Japanese bombers. Death was instantaneous so no suffering resulted. I was present at his funeral and he was rendered full military honors. I had all his effects gathered and they shall be forwarded to you.
Hoping that this letter will help you to know a little more of the circumstances attending Harold's fate, I am
    Sincerely yours,

    Elmer C. Woods

    Lieutenant Colonel, U. S.

    Marine Corps Reserve,

    Commanding.

Anne Reay

F, b. 28 July 1824, d. 13 May 1913, File ID#30

Anne (Reay) Relph
  • Anne Reay was born on 28 July 1824 at Raby, Holme Cultram Parish, Cumberland, England, daughter of John Reay of Raby and Sarah Mann.
  • Anne Reay was baptized on 5 September 1824, daughter of John Reay of Raby and Sarah Mann, at Abbey Church, Holme Cultram Parish, Cumberland, England.
  • Anne was a dress maker at Wigton, Cumberland, England.
  • (Click the icon to see a Sampler made by Anne Reay. Pauline Dennis said it was brought on ship board from England.).
  • On 27 November 1847 Anne Reay, age 23, married Thomas Relph, age 23, son of John Relph of Wigton and Ann (Nanny) Hall, at Abbey Church, Holme Cultram Parish, Cumberland, England, by banns, in the presence of Jonathan Mann and Elizabeth Rudd.
  • In 1849 Anne Reay and Thomas Relph emigrated from England to America.
  • In 1849 her infant daughter, Sarah Relph, died a premature birth on board ship to America.
  • Anne was a Dressmaker.
  • On 3 September 1850 Anne Reay and Thomas Relph were enumerated in the 1850 US Census at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, where the census entry shows Thomas, age 27, with Ann and baby John in house Nr. 1911. He is a tailor. Apparantly, Ann did not officially practice the trade of dressmaker that she learned in England. There is no indication of property in this census. (Note: Since they owned their own home 10 years later, it does not seem likely that they arrived in America impoverished.).
  • On 19 June 1860 Anne Reay and Thomas Relph were enumerated in the 1860 US Census at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, where the census entry shows Thomas, age 37, and family in house Nr. 53. He is a tailor with $500 worth of "real" property and $150 worth of personal property. Ann is listed as working as a "domestic". The children are John, 11, Mathew, 7, Joseph H., 6, the ill-fated Thomas, 3, and Sarah 2.
  • On 9 March 1864 her son, Thomas Henry Relph, died at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, from the bite of a rabid dog.
  • On 5 August 1870 Anne Reay and Thomas Relph were enumerated in the 1870 US Census at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, The census entry shows Thomas, age 46, and family in house Nr. 340. He is a tailor with $2500 worth of "real" property, and $200 worth of personal property. Ann is keeping house. John, the eldest son, is 21 and living at home and is a gardener. The household also includes Sarah E., 12, Anna M. 7, and Mary E. is 2. Son Thomas had died of rabies by this time. Joseph is 17 and lives with Mr. Wesbster, a farmer (26), as a laborer. Matthew is 18 and living with Sidney Wright, a wagonmaker (28) and wife.
  • Her father, John Reay of Raby, died and was buried on 4 July 1872 at Abbey Church, Holme Cultram Parish, Cumberland, England.
  • In September 1880 Anne Reay and Thomas Relph were enumerated in the 1880 US Census at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, where the census entry shows Thomas, age 56, and the family is in house Nr. 280, on page 27. Thomas has become the postmaster of Sennett. Living at home are wife, Ann "keeping house", son Mathew (sic), age 27, a wagonmaker. Sarah, age 22, is a teacher. Anna M. is 17 and "at home", and Mary E. is 12 and "at school".
Son John and family live six houses away at house Nr. 284. Analysis of the ages of John and his wife indicate that the census was taken sometime between Sept. and Nov. of 1880, but there is no date on the census.
  • Her mother, Sarah Mann, died at age 85 years, 4 months and 26 days and was buried on 16 June 1881 at Abbey Church, Holme Cultram Parish, Cumberland, England.
  • On 4 January 1891 Thomas Relph, her husband, died at age 66 at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, USA, probably heart failure per Sennett death register.
  • It appears that Ann (Reay) Relph maintained contact with her brother, Thomas and sister-in-law, since a notice of Rachel (Parkin) Reay's death in 1893 was among the family artifacts owned by Paulina Dennis in 1979.
  • In 1900 Anne Reay was enumerated in the 1900 US Census at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, shows the widowed Ann as the head of household, with Sarah E. and Anna M. living with her. They own their own home, free of mortgage. And the census indicates that all three of them can read and write. Mother Ann is listed as a merchant, and Sarah is listed as postmistress. As usual, for Anna, there is no ocupational listing.
The census entry incorrectly lists Ann's number of children as 2. Oddly enough, the immigration information is left blank.
  • She died on 13 May 1913 at Sennett, Cayuga County, New York, USA, at age 88.
