  • THEFT OF SPECTACLES AT MARYPORT.

Yesterday (Tuesday) morning Mary Fitzsimmons (23) was charged at the Maryport Police Court before Mr. T. S. Ritson and Mr. T. Carey - with stealing a pair of gold rimmed spectacles and case, the property of Rachel Ann Relph, Coffee Tavern, Maryport, on the 5th inst.

Prosecutrix said that on Wednesday night, the 4th inst., she was reading the newpapers, after which she put her spectacles in the case and left them on the mantelshelf. The following morning when she came downstairs prisoner was having breakfast in the Coffee Tavern and sitting near the fireplace. She missed the spectacles on Friday night. She valued the articles at 12s 6d.

James Hammill, marine store dealer, John Street, Maryport, said prisoner came to his house at eleven o'clock on Thursday morning. While he was sitting there he saw the spectacles on the table, and he asked what she would take for them. She said she would take one shilling, and she wanted lodgings. Witness said the spectacles were no use to him, and she said she would take ninepence for them, and he bought them.

In answer to Inspector Notman, witness said he asked where she got them, and she said at Wigton as a present.

P.C. Richardson proved the arrest of the prisoner, who, in reply to the charge, said "I never saw anything of the spectacles." Then she said, "I'd better tell the truth; I might get off easier. I did take them, and sold them for ninepence, and I will show you where I sold them."

Prisoner pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour.

Nellie Gertrude Follett

F, b. circa April 1858, File ID#7
  • Nellie Gertrude Follett was born circa April 1858 at Conquest, New York.
  • Nellie Gertrude Follett married Mr. Golden.
  • Before 1897 Mr. Golden, her husband, died.
  • On 22 September 1897 Nellie Gertrude Follett married Matthew Mann Relph, age 46, son of Thomas Relph Emigrant to America 1849 and Anne Reay, at Auburn, Cayuga County, New York.
  • On 8 June 1900 Nellie Gertrude Follett and Matthew Mann Relph were enumerated in the 1900 US Census at 9 Morris Street, Ward 10, Auburn, Cayuga County, New York, Matthew and his family are enumerated. By this time, he has married Nellie Follett Golden. The census shows that this is his second marriage. This is also Nellie's second marriage, and she has never had any children. He owns his home on Morris Street, but it has a mortgage on it. The census also shows that he has not been unemployed. He is a wagon maker.
  • Nellie had been the wife of Matthew's brother-in-law in his first marriage to Sybil Golden. Therefore she was Nellie G. Follett Golden at the time of her marriage to Matthew.

It seems that Matthew's wife, Sybil Golden, died about the same time as Nellie's husband, Mr. Golden. The widowed Nellie took it upon herself to watch after Matthew and his children, coming each day to clean the house and cook for them. Eventually Matthew married her. For whatever reasons of personality conflict or resentment, Matthew's children were not very fond of Nellie. It caused an alienation between father and children that was healed only in later adult years. (This story as told by Paulina Dennis.)

According to the 1900 census, Nellie never had any children, either with Matthew or her first husband.

Apparantly, Matthew's sister Sarah was very fond of Nellie. In her will, she stipulated that should her sister Anna die and the funds be distributed to her nieces and nephews, Matthew's children should not have a share. Nellie was to have it instead.
